walks programme - march-july 2016
3 March Jenny C: A walk from Exeter quay, by the river to Double Locks and return by the canal. A level walk of about 3 miles. Lunch at the Prospect Inn.
17 March Sheila W and Bernice K: The walk is through River Bovey Woodlands and the old Newton Abbot-to-Moretonhampstead railway line. Distance: 3 miles. Parking available in the nearby public car park. Lunch details will follow.
31 March Sue and Mike S: Starting at 10:30 am from the New Inn car park at Coleford, near Crediton ( Grid Ref. SS772011 ) Distance : 4½ miles. Terrain : Lanes and footpaths, with 2 hills, but no stiles. The fields may be wet and muddy so waterproof boots are recommended. Places of Interest: 14th century church of St. Andrew, with unusual 15th century carved bench-ends and a fine rood-screen. Directions to Start: From Exeter take the A377 to Crediton, continue on the A377 for 2 miles to a turning on the left signposted to Coleford. In 2 miles after going under a railway bridge and just before a sharp right into the village the New Inn car park is on the right
14 April Ken R: A walk from Newton Poppleford meeting in the car park (free). The walk is 3¼ miles long with no big hills and only a few stiles. Lunch at the Cannon Inn.
28 April Keith and Irene B: Walk in North Tawton, passing some interesting buildings. Length about 4 miles but a shorter walk is available of one mile to reach the same lunch venue. Details to be decided e.g. pub, café or picnic.
12 May Bob D: Meet at Silverton Car Park (GR 957030) (signposted from centre of village and off Wyndham Road), not the Community Hall car park which is adjacent. There is a 55B bus from the Bus Station at 9:45 am and the getting off point is outside The Meads and opposite to the Community Hall on Wyndham Road--no bus stop but ask the driver). The problem for those who may wish to use public transport is that return services from Silverton to Exeter are at 1:03 pm and 3:03 pm so no opportunity for lunch if wanting to return on the earlier service.
The walk will be about 3½ miles along lanes and footpaths with some short inclines. We will have lunch afterwards at 'The Lamb Inn' in Silverton.
26 May Bill T: Start from the car park beside Iron Age “castle” on Woodbury Common (032873). Advise wellies and sticks after rain. Most of the walk is on bridle paths and there are lovely views in fine weather. Lunch at the pub in Woodbury.
9 June Peter and Jean B: Meet at the Forestry Commission car park at Mamhead, OSGR SX920808, for an easy ramble of some 4 - 5 miles mostly along forest paths and tracks. There are no stiles and the going is either fairly flat or gently sloping.Lunch will be at the Ley Arms, Kenn, (OSGR SX922856), provisionally booked for 1:15 – 1:30 pm.
23 June Jenny W: A circular walk of 3½ – 4 miles, starting from Four Firs car park on Woodbury Common OS ref 931864. We will be walking south to Bystock Nature Reserve and then following the East Devon Way back to Four Firs. Lunch at a pub in Woodbury. More details nearer the time.
7 July Tricia B: Killerton. Meet at the bottom end of the walled car park at 10:30 am for a 4½ mile walk. This will take us around the perimeter of the estate through fields, woods, and along tracks and will take in the two chapels. No stiles. It could be muddy after rain. Lunch at the restaurant afterwards.
