Forum could not hold its regular weekly meeting at The Mint on Wednesday 17th August because the hall was required by the church for another function.
To fill the gap in our programme our resourceful social activities organisers arranged for those members interested to spend the day in Whimple - the morning at Whimple's Heritage Centre, lunch at the Thirsty Farmer, and after that a tour of the parish church.
As a result of the enthusuiasm and drive of volunteers from the village, Whimple now has a splendid Heritage Centre - in effect a local museum - located in the yard of the New Fountain Inn. Here we were treated to a fascinating talk by one of the volunteers taking us quickly through the main points of Whimple's history. This was followed by time browsing through the many and varied exhibits, including the coming of the railway, the influence of the Whiteway family and the Whiteways Cyder factory, and the service of village residents in the two World Wars.
We were met at the church by Martin Horrell, an expert on church design and craftsmanship who had given us a talk on rood screens last year. He took us round the church, pointing out the many features of interest to be seen in the atained glass windows and in various carved panels, and regaled us with the life stories of many of the saints depicted there - most of which, it must be said ended rather gruesomely!
All in all it proved to be an absorbing and educational day out.
