A recent Forum Visit was to Chambercombe Manor, a manor house set in a secluded valley in the outskirts of Ilfracombe, dating back to the 11th century and mentioned in the Domesday Book. We had a guided tour and were regaled by stories of luring ships onto rocks at night and alleged hauntings.
The access was rather hairy for our large coach (it was the first public hiring of this particular coach) and we doubt whether it was as pristine when it returned as it had been earlier, after brushing low hanging branches along the entrance drive! Fortunately we were blessed by lovely weather and were able to spend an hour or two in Ilfracombe in the afternoon..
Future events: We are planning a visit to Sherborne Castle on Tuesday 18 October. The cost of coach travel and a self guided tour of the castle will be around £20. We may be able to visit the abbey also on this trip. The annual Forum Lunch at The Devon Hotel is to be on Wednesday 18 January, in place of the usual Forum meeting. This is always a lovely event and a great opportunity to socialise with other members. The cost this time is £19 for a 3 course meal followed by coffee and mints. We will start to take names and menu choices during October.
