The medical research being carried out within this research centre is impressive, and focusses mainly on the fields of Type 2 diabetes and dementia. They have already identified a specific genetic form of Type 2 diabetes and successfully developed a tablet-based treatment that has improved patient care and reduced healthcare costs. This research is one of the first examples of genomic medicine where a knowledge of a patient's genome determines their treatment.
There are two main areas of dementia research being undertaken. One seeks to find out how non-genetic factors influence the way genetic differences contribute to the disease. The other focusses on analyzing genetic aspects of dementia in human populations. Recent work has concentrated on the impact of inflammation in the brain on dementia, a process as yet poorly understood.
Since there was no charge for these tours the groups decided to make a donation to one of the research funds. The Committee voted unanimously for the University of Exeter Dementia Research Fund and we have given this fund £125, plus any gift aid that can be claimed.
