The second walk of the Walking Group's spring programme took place recently. After meeting at Bernaville Nurseries, the group made its way to the gatehouse at the entrance to the Pynes Estate. From here they diverted around part of the perimeter of the nearby waterworks before walking across the low-lying fields within the Exe's flood plain.
After passing by Pynes Weir, the group continued to the farm at Woodrow Barton, the house there being held by some to be used as a reference by Jane Austen in Sense and Sensibility. After passing by the farmyard and having a herd of young cattle pass by them, the group headed up in a north-westerly direction to the outskirts of Upton Pyne.
From here they detoured off into Bower Wood, there to inspect a WWII relic, and from there it was a case of continuing southwards across fields to come out close to the front facade of Pynes House, which is believed by some to have also been used by Jane Austen. From there the group made its way back to the cars, thence to lunch at The Stables.
After lunch there was a short walk around Upton Pyne with particular reference to its church where Linda Findlay, who spoke to Forum a few weeks previously about its restoration, kindly made herself available to show members around the church and the restoration works.
